Minister for Seniors Tracey Martin today opened consultation on development of a strategy to prepare for an ageing population. The announcement was made at the Annual General Meeting for GreyPower Howick and Pakuranga.

Like most developed countries, our population is ageing due to a combination of longer life spans and declining birth rates. By 2038 there will be more that 1.3 million people aged 65 or over, and they will make up nearly a quarter of the population.

The new strategy will replace the New Zealand Positive Ageing Strategy, which was developed in 2001.

The consultation is open from 29 June to 24 August.

Following the consultation officials will draft the new strategy and an action plan. A second round of consultation on the proposed strategy will take place in early 2019.
